Diverticular Disease

Diverticulosis is a condition where you get sac-like pouches forming on the inside of the colon. If these pouches become inflamed it is called diverticulitis.

Diverticulitis is most common over the age of 40 years. Some people may not have any symptoms associated with it, whereas others could experience stomach symptoms, such as cramping, bloating, diarrhoea. When someone has symptoms, it is important to get a proper diagnosis before embarking on any dietary changes.

If you suffer from bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, bowel incontinence or flatulence, you may have an irritable bowel component to your diverticulosis. If so, you could benefit from dietary changes similar to those recommended with irritable bowel syndrome.

Working in 1 on 1 consultation will allow me to identify foods which are an issue for you and create a diet plan that will minimise your symptoms. There are certain foods which are poorly digested and/or absorbed and can cause issues for Diverticulitis sufferers. By avoiding foods such as (but not limited to) cauliflower, onions, garlic, certain fruits and vegetables etc. we can go a long way towards managing your condition.
